Burwood Brickworks | Melbourne, Australia

Re-imaged retail with a living building that gives more than it takes. Shopping has never been more guilt-free 🛒

Burwood Brickworks in Melbourne by Frasers Property Australia has been named the world’s most sustainable shopping centre by the International Living Future Institute. The 13,000 m2 building features an urban farm rooftop, an acre farm & eatery, a cinema and several (independent) retailers.

🌱 The Living Buildings framework asks that a building operates as effectively as a flower – receiving its energy needs from the sun, using and circulating water, producing no waste or toxicity, all while looking beautiful.
🌱 PVC has been scrapped from the build entirely in favour of less toxic alternatives such as reclaimed hardwood.
🌱 The rooftop greenhouse grows a variety of fruit, herbs and veggies & retailers had to meet strict standards.
🌱 Learnings are shared in a ‘Greensheet’- a comprehensive building materials database of products vetted & used at Burwood Brickworks.

Amazing work!
